Dog hot spots are one of the most commonly seen problems in pet dogs. Sometimes referred to as acute moist dermatitis, it presents a worrisome situation for the pet and its owner. Painful and swollen, it is always itchy and the dog keeps scratching at the spot.
The best is to prevent it happening as it is easily preventable. The only problem is that once it breaks out, its spread is difficult to contain. Prompt action should be taken to control and cure it once it is noticed.
Dog hot spots give a very foul smell and it is reddish, swollen and filled with pus. Anywhere on the body of the dog is not immune though places like the ears and the legs are much more usually affected.
Hair falls out and this is about the distinguishing symptom. The dog seeks relief and thus keeps gnawing and biting at the affected spot thus spreading the infection more and getting other spots infected. At this point, a fast reaction is advised as it can get worse sooner than expected.
Dog hot spot treatments are to be initiated as soon as possible. Check in with your local vet doctor immediately. He starts work by sedating the dog as he knows how painful dog hot spots can be. The area is cleared of hair and the affected spot uncovered. Dilute povidone-iodine shampoo is used to wash the spot first. Another option is chlorhexidine. This also applied the same way as the povidone-iodine shampoo treatment. Leave the skin to dry and apply some steroidal liniment to the spot. This has to be done at all sites of the dog hot spots. A BiteNot collar prevents the dog from continuously scratching the spots.
The owner has a direct part to play in the treatment as dog hot spot treatments have to be continued for a couple of days more after leaving the vet clinic. Recommended is between ten days and two weeks. Some oral medications may be given to minimise the itching. Antibiotics are better used for this. Also, corticosteroid is also useful.
Dog hot spot treatments proceed from identifying the type of hot spot in question. Dog hot spots could either be superficial or deep. Superficial infections are easily attended to while the deeper ones require much more intense treatment. It may be somewhat difficult to tell which is which and that is why it is so essential to see a veterinary doctor.
The actual cause of the infection may not be easy to determine. Some may be as a result of moisture generated from the accumulation and integration of dead skin cells and hair follicles rubbing against the skin. Still, skin trauma has also been mentioned as a possible cause. It may also occur from a marked deficiency in fatty acids. The cause is not much of a problem other than that it may help prevent future occurrences, but the major thing is to effect treatments as soon as the symptoms are noticed.
